舞岡公園は田園や雑木林の風景が広がる自然公園です。起伏にとんだ谷戸（やと）（注１）の散策は四季折々の景観が楽しめます。野鳥やリスなどが観察できます。川や池にはドジョウ、エビ、ザリガニなどが生息しますが採取は禁止されています。田んぼに入って色々な体験もできます。

（注1）谷戸(やと）とは、台地や丘陵に小さな谷が複雑に刻み込まれた地域のこと。絞り水（水）がそのまま残り、山の上や斜面には雑木林、谷間には田んぼ（谷戸田）が広がり、さまざまな生き物がすみ、伝統的な農林業と自然とが共生している「里山の自然」を指す。「やと」「やつ」「や」はほぼ同義語である。

舞岡公園は横浜市が管理していますが地元市民団体によって運営されています。自然を守りながら、そして訪れる人が気持ちよく過ごせるように、歩道、トイレ、休憩場所などが非常にバランスよく整備されています。舞岡の里山そして郷里を愛する地元ボランティアならではの成果でしょう。この谷戸を守るための公園つくりは1983年ころに始まったそうです。実際公園としてオープンしたのが1993年でした。今では約500の団体が舞岡公園を育む会として活動しています。

舞岡公園へのアクセスは、横浜市営地下鉄舞岡駅から公園の北側入り口まで徒歩25分。またJR戸塚駅から江ノ電バス京急ニュータウン行きで終点まで行きますと公園南側入り口です。または江ノ電バス舞岡台循環に乗れば、坂下口で下車して5分くらいで北側の入り口です。どちらかと言うと南側の方が正門で、南側には100台くらい入る有料駐車場と公園管理事務所があります。駐車料金は2時間まで300円、その後は20分ごとに50円。

舞岡公園「小谷戸の里」には横浜市が指定した歴史的建造物である明治時代の古民家が保存されています。そこではボランティアの皆さんがわらじを作ったり、竹馬を作ったりして訪れる人たちを楽しませてくれます。民家の中も見学する事ができ、昔ながらの土間では薪でご飯が炊かれていたりします。午前9時から午後5時まで公開されています。第3月曜日が閉館日となっております。
